guelph Youth Collaborations

Although most of our program attendees are young children and their families, the CRR is working hard to engage the middle childhood (6-12) and youth (12+) demographics at our organization and make books and reading fun and accessible! We are delighted to have had some recent opportunities for such engagement!

In February, we were invited to speak to a group of 25 students at Cenntenial CVI! Joanna brought 135 books for students to select and take home, and spoke to the class about the effects of reading on health and development, as well as the many benefits people reap from reading throughout their lifetime.

Also, back in February, the CRR was delighted to partner with Immigrant Services of Guelph Wellington on an exciting, collaborative youth leadership program! On feb 5th, Joanna attended Immigrant Services and met with the wonderful staff and youth participants in the program. Joanna brought an array of books, demonstrated how to read aloud to children, and spoke about selecting engaging, age-appropriate content when working with young children and about planning an engaging craft activity to accompany the story.

During March Break, the youth came to the Children's Reading Room to facilitate our much-loved Story Time & Craft program! They did a wonderful job reading to the children and helping them create a fun and engaging craft!

Quick reminder, we offer Flashlight Readers, an after-school program geared toward elementary school-age children, every Friday afternoon from 3-5 at our primary location at 210 Silvercreek Parkway N in the Willow West community.

The CRR is beyond happy to continue supporting high school and post-secondary students through field placements, mentorship opportunities, and volunteer positions. Please connect with us if you are interested in participating in any of these opportunities.
